Hi Rick,

Nice to hear from you. And thank you for the pics of the kids. They are
really growing up!

I've never read the piece by Quinney that you are looking for. The best
database for criminology is the NCJRS Abstracts Database. I did a search on
Ron and it came up with even technical reports he had done as a graduate
student at OSU and his dissertation abstract!!! In any event, I did a search
on Quinney and came up with 25 items. Two looked like possibilities, but I
can't tell for sure. You can access the database online. Other than that I'm
afraid I don't have any ideas. Perhaps Sue Caulfield might be able to help?
She is more into this area than I am.

I've been working on the analysis for the paper. The data are very tricky and
I am trying to decide what to do about the seasonality in the crime and
unemployment series. I ran across a technical paper by Carolyn Block that
deals with the seasonality issue, so I have had my graduate assistant request
it via interlibrary loan. In a nutshell the issue is this. Both unemployment
and crime are seasonal phenomena. However, their seasonality differs. To what
extent does this affect the relationship between the two, and how should it be
modeled? Can it be modeled without excessive multicollinearity when successive
lags of unemployment are added? Should the seasonality in the crime series be
removed and then allow the seasonality in unemployment to explain residual
variance in the crime series? Routine activity theory would seem to suggest
that the unemployment/crime relationship should vary by season. For example,
unemployment is usually low in December, but crimes like robbery and burglary
should increase due to increased attractive targets and lack of guardianship of
property. Thus, crime would increase for these reasons rather than because of
an increase in motivated offenders. In any event, I am struggling with it!

Hope you all had nice holidays. I had a nice visit with my family for ten days
then was back about a week before we started up again this past Wednesday. We
have 10 people coming in for interviews over the next three weeks, so it will
be crazy indeed. We are recruiting for as many as 4 positions.

Please say hi to Deb for me. Take care.

Best wishes, Susan
