European countries are very uncomfortable with detention

with the warm environment that was created by the Turkey’s formal candidacy

which holds the EU presidency, held a meeting with the 14 EU member countries
to discuss detention of the HADEP mayors. According to a source from Portugal’s
Foreign Ministry, once the EU reaches a decision, a statement will be released.
The London-based huma rights organization Amnesty International (AI) said
that it was concerned that mayors might be tortured and called for the
immediate release of the mayors. The Switzerland branch of the Amnesty
International called on Swiss Foreign Minister Deiss, who is currently
in Turkey for a visit, to press Turkey to release the mayors.
European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine released
a statement condemning the detentions and strongly urging the release of
the mayors. President Fontaine stated, "We can not accept this. These detentions
will damage Turkey’s image. The arrest of elected mayors will create obstacles
for a peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue." The detentions, which many
political groups in the EU have protested, will be categorized as an emergency
issues on the EU’s agenda. A group of Italian parliamentarians collected
signatures and asked the Italian government to put pressure on Turkey and
also gave a questionnaire to the parliament. According to the Italian newspaper
Liberazione, Vice Chairperson of the Senate and 5 other senators collected
