I wish to bring to the attention of sociologists of law an excellent
classroom video, which poignantly highlights the discretionary nature of law
or the "law in action."

P.O.V. (Point of View -- PBS' award-winning documentary series) will be
airing a two-hour film, "Well-Founded Fear" on political asylum this June
5. The film depicts the human, political, cultural, and legal aspects of the
decisions to grant or deny affirmative requests for asylum by INS hearing
officers. From this 2-hour film, POV has prepared a 30-minute pre-screening
video, designed especially for classroom use. This segment shows the human
process at work within our legal system -- both through the eyes of
applicants fleeing persecution in their homeland and the discretionary
decision-making of INS officers.

Accompanying the 30-minute video is a Resource Guide [discussion questions,
bibliography, etc.], which I have developed on behalf of the ABA Division
for Public Education, which is partnering with P.O.V. in the dissemination
of this pre-screening video program to college classrooms.

We are seeking to identify 10-12 faculty who would be willing to screen the
video in one of their classes, BEFORE the premiere for the two-hour film on
June 5, and complete a short evaluation form.

If you wish to request a video, on a loan basis, for classroom screening,
please contact John Ryan at <jryan3@staff.abanet.org> or at 312/988-5734.
