Paul Leighton's syllabus for his students in Violence and Society is
admireable indeed and in the best tradition of critical criminology...the
point of which is neither to count nor to punish but to work toward a
low-crime society...

There are several pieces on the Red Feather Domain which might be of use to
those of you who wish to emulate Paul...first is an over-view of three
approaches to crime and justice...Conservative, Liberal and Democratic
Socialism...the article concludes with a survey of the features of
low-crime societies around the world based upon the work of Hal Pepinsky,
Eliot Currie, Louk Hulsman, together with some ideas from my own work...

It is at:

Then too, there are a series of articles on non-linear dynamics in crime
and punishment...and social control...these are at:

All good luck to you and your students, Paul,

PS: Paul: tell your students that I took my first crim courses at EMU about
a hundred years ago...those and other courses at EMU persuaded me to change
my program from Pre-Med to Sociology...I had worked at hospitals in Flint
and Ann Arbor and found that, by comparison, sociology had the sweep of
history and the depth of knowledge that I sought...while medicine, at the
time, was far too reductionist and formulaic...so I owe EMU a great debt...
