Are these actions of hate increasing or being publicized more? Moreover, are
standard theories of crime and criminal activity adequate in understanding
these hate activities? Will this mass demonstration be a deterrent to future
actions?

Subject: Hate Activities Against Lummi Nation, Ferndale and Bellingham
PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG TO FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, ANY WHO CAN COME TO SUPPORT
OUR NEIGHBORS IN BELLINGHAM, Washington!
Dear Friends and Fellow Peacemakers,
The citizens of Ferndale invite you to join with the Lummi Indian Nation in
a candlelight vigil united against the hate crimes and acts that have been
devastating Lummi Nation, Ferndale and Bellingham in recent weeks. The
vigil in Ferndale is particularly in response to a hate letter with a death
threat and swastika handed to a Lummi freshman female September 12 at
Ferndale High School. Since this incident, Lummi Nation has been struck
with burglaries including swastikas and "white power" graffitied on a home
and the same racial language was sprayed on a Fairhaven District business in
Bellingham.
This past week an African-American man new to the area was left a vile,
racist letter on the window of his van. Many human rights advocates in
Whatcom County believe these are not random acts but deliberate and
organized. The candlelight vigil will take place Wednesday, October 4, 7PM
at the Ferndale City Hall parking lot, 2095 Main Street (across from 7-11).
Speakers will include our youth leaders, Lummi tribal leaders, Mayor Carolyn
Jensen of Ferndale, Damani Johnson of the Coalition for Human Dignity as
well as other invited speakers. Please bring your candle. We appreciate
your support and prayers if you cannot attend. Please spread the word as we
desire to give witness that Hate Has No Home Here!
Sincerely,
Debi Covert-Bowlds
