"Blocking" means that the software filters homepages that
a family's computer can access, and blocks those pages deemed
"unacceptable" for children.
Although the intent of blocking software is often well-intended, it risks
censoring legitimate homepages that don't pass muster because of use of
"language," ideological content, or other reasons that could lead to
self-censorship.
In the case of the Crit Crim homepage, the blocking has occured because,
I am told, the Unabomer manuscript is on the page. This text file is
a useful resource for scholars, media, and others, and continues to
receive numerous "hits" each day. To be blocked for providing resources
directly relevant to our professional mission is a bit frightening.
Because Cyber Patrol is (supposedly) the leading blocking software,
the effects of this censorship are consequential.
The purpose of this note is to inform the list of the problem. There is
an "appeals" process, and I'll post my "appeal" later today.
I've attached below the electronic confirmation that we're being
blocked. Verbal confirmation was given by Debra Greaves of
Microsolutions (508-416-1000; debrag@microsys.com).
