OHIO UNIVERSITY seeks to hire a tenure track assistant professor for a
position as a criminology generalist for a certificate program within the
sociology degree. Candidates will be given responsibility for the
internship program, and will teach from among criminal justice, juvenile
justice, corrections, or other sociology or criminology undergraduate and
graduate courses. Roughly 240 of the department's 400 majors are in the
criminology certificate program, and criminologists make up six of the 24
FTE sociology and anthropology faculty. Thus far, all criminologists have
been sociologists who also teach in the general sociology program. All are
critical/feminist criminology friendly. Given the newly defined
responsibilities of this replacement position, it is possible for a Ph.D.
in criminology or criminal justice with a very strong social science
background to succeed in this position. The department requires a balance
between research and teaching excellence, but strong methodological and
policy analysis skills are highly desirable. Good salary and benefits.
Ohio University, located on a beautiful campus in a prototypical college
town in the rolling foothills of Appalachia 75 miles southeast of Columbus,
is listed in most guides, including "selective admission," "best value,"
"most value-added education," as well as a best place for African-American
students. Chartered in 1804, it is a Research II institution with a very
strong criminology library. It has the facilities one would expect from a
school with 28 doctoral degree programs and 48 master's programs. Teaching
