My interpretation of Marty's message about the ASC directory is totally
distinct from Stuart's. For example, I often have to contact people about
key issues related to the division's journal (CRITICAL CRIMINOLOGY),
various research projects, etc., and I often have problems reaching them
because the directory is out of date.
How can we discuss the issues raised by Stuart if we can't communicate
with each other? I fully appreciate Stuart's concerns about looking at "the
bigger picture," but sometimes the smaller issues must be addressed in
order to meet this objective.
Many people are currently working on the issues raised by Stuart and they
are doing so in isolation. In my opinion, one our major tasks for 1998 is
to facilate better communication patterns. Thus, I don't think Marty's
message is trivial or an attempt to gain status.
