Dear Colleagues: The annual meeting of the ASC is an excellent opportunity
to get some of our students involved in presenting papers (panels and
roundtable discussions). I have previously had a number of my undergraduate
students present papers (some of which have been published) at the Annual
ASC meetings with terrific results. Do consider encouraging some of your
students to present some of their papers at the upcoming meeting in
Washington DC. With a little mentoring (introductions, support, information
about different informal gatherings, book displays, and other Divisions,
etc.) students can get a very good idea about what critical/radical
criminology is all about (and about what more conservative criminologists
are doing). And of course the building up of a vita is critical at their
juncture. Without doubt the information, experience, and development of
confidence in their critical thinking will do much for their career
advancement and the critical/radical criminological field. Often, too,
there are some monies around a college/university that can be tapped into.
Even if it is not there formally, there are creative ways of getting some
support for student travel. Previously Ray Michalowski has made the
Crit/Rad Crim. suite available for students to sleep in (and of course
there is a limit here). So do get in touch with him as to availability.
Marty Schwartz is organizing some of the critical/radical criminology
panels generally, so you might want to get in touch with him after you have
gathered the necessery information together on the student participants.
Consider also organizing a roundtable where the pressure is less for the
student.
See yah at the conference! Dragan Milovanovic
