In some Asian cultures (India? China?) the color red was (is?) used for
bridal wear - in the U.S. (and European cultures) it has historically been
associated with prostitutes and "fallen women." In some African societies
the color white is worn at funerals - we wear black at funerals and dress
our brides in white. I would argue that the emotional response follows the
social construction of meaning.
