Shannon's comment, like the others, is very astute. While the question of
how many "selves" there are is certainly important, we can direct part of
our effort to answer it by asking a different question: how many selves are
enacted, honored, expected, and named in the course of interaction, and
especially different situations? In other words there is not one answer,
in interactionist terms, except to say, "it depends" on what people define
and recognize. A related issue seems to be underlying the "action" in
this discussion, and that is the view and nature of the self from the
standpoint of the actor and the self in terms of the other, and the
interaction through which these are brought together.
