Hi everyone!

I just finished reading the frame analysis introduction, assigned for
this week.... I am CONFUSED!!!! I've read it twice, very thoroughly
and still can't seem to grasp a good deal of it.

I do understand James' ideas that different worlds become real based on
the attention we give each of them. That makes sense; however I don't
understand the shock he explains to happen when we leave one world and
enter another. It seems to me that it is very natural to focus our
attention on one world, say theater, and then switch later on in the day
to focus on philosophy. This change in focus doesn't seem to qualify as
a shock in my opinion.

The entire relevance of the last 3 pages baffles me also. I understand
what he is saying about the ridiculousness of the endless commentary in
literature. Is that what he means by "framing?" -taking something that
just is and explaining it through your own perspective? If so, it seems
like he could've made that point much more succintly. If not, will
someone please explain what all the talk about astericks has to do with
sociology and framing analysis???

Thanks so much! -Lynsey
