I think we spent so much time 'looking for ourselves' that we finally found
something, and it has engulfed us. It seems to me that a very large number of
us have serious trouble seeing beyond our selves. I don't really mean
instrospection, so much as, I guess, some version of ego-centrism,
self-centeredness, whatever.
Many of my students have difficulty getting abstract enough to discuss almost
anything in terms other than themselves.
