May I take advantage of this channel to try to clear up some problems
about the letters of acceptance for the SSSI meeting. Please share
the account with anybody else who is concerned that they have not
heard from us and is not a subscriber.

The original publicity said that we expected to send letters out
during December. To spread the workload, it was agreed that these
would come from South Bank University, where the chair of the
Scientific Committee, Anne Murcott, works, rather than from
Nottingham. Unfortunately, Anne's department moved offices and got
cut off from their email, which meant that I couldn't communicate
with them properly for several weeks. This slowed the whole process
down as they needed to verify some addresses with me. Then, as some
of you will know, the UK closes for Christmas and New Year to a much
greater degree that the US, i.e all universities are shut from about
December 22 to January 3. Anyway, we got the letters out just in
time to hit a mail strike in London. The mail strike was settled
just before the blizzards hit the US East Coast and I gather that
letters are only now starting to arrive. Given the efficiency of the
US Post Office faced with any sort of disruption to normal service, a
few may never arrive.

The basic position is this: all papers submitted so far have been
accepted. The condition for inclusion in the programme is
registration by May 1st. First-named authors and panel organizers
have been sent early bird booking forms and asked to pass them on to
co-authors or panellists. If you do not receive a letter in the next
few days and need one to make a case for university or other funding,
please email or fax me (your international access code +44 (115) 951-
5232) and I will fax you a formal invitation.

Further details of the meeting will be in the next SSSI Notes
mailing, which will also include booking forms.
