David, Tahnks for your extended comments on the self. Certainly, in regard to
inquiry into my own and other's sleves, we continue to fabricate as symbolic se
lf and after all, did we or even Descartes ever consctruct anything other than
a partial, if not fragmented, self. A unified self is only at bottom an abstra
ction. Some of us refuse the fragmentation even though it beckons us loudly. Y
es, up here in the cold North with temperatures persisting at -20 for long peri
ods of time, consumerism fades into those unvisited malls. Who needs them? My c
omments are not a reaction against Pomo. I embrace cuch of it. But the linguis
tic I who is embracing, as you say, stands over against or with the structure,
systmes, etc that we argue are fragmented. So.....
