Becky-

Sorry I'm late with this. Kellner was here working on a project,
and I ended up swamped with work. Imagine my suprise :)

Anyway, here's a status report on INTERACT:

At the beginning of this year, Jim Thomas and I created
a new listserve discussion group under the auspices of
the SSSI, and thanks to the genorosity of NIU. This list,
called INTERACT, is a forum where students of Symbolic Interactionism,
both grad and undergrad, can "meet" to discuss issues relating
to their studies of Interactionism. In addition to being open to students,
INTERACT is also open to practictioners of Interactionism, the professors and
researchers, and other members of SSSI. A number of our collegues,
David Altheide, Donna Darden, Stan Lyman, and several others
have joined the group, and the quality of discussion has been of an
extremely high caliber. My entire Self and Society seminar is subscribed, as
well as a number of classes from other instituions.

IN the two months that INTERACT has been active, discussion topics have
ranged from a conversation about the meaning of "self" and "mind" to a
discussion of Goffman's _Frame Analysis_. Currently, the list is discussing
Simmel's
seminal essay _The Adventurer_ and it's relationship to Lyman and Scott's
discussion of Adventures in _A Sociology of the Absurd_. Pretty heady
stuff, and I love it!

INTERACT was created on the assumption that geographic space no longer need
be a barrier to the exchange of ideas. We envision INTERACT as a global site
for the discussion of Symbolic Interaction. Please encourage your students
and collegues to subscribe. Feel free to use this "space" for your own
purposes, class projects, information seeking, and conversation.
