I'd like to make a quick public service announcement.
My guess is that Laurel isn't the only person
here who is thinking about upgrading
their computers, in a large part due to
the amazing changes taking place on the Internet.
Changes are coming fast and furious, and
it's a really incredible thing. A journey of sorts.
Related to this is the huge number of "rip offs" going
on with the sale of computer related merchandise.
The biggest one currently in the works is
the $500 home internet server, but there are lots of others.
When looking for a new computer, do not (trust me!)
shop retail. Most retail computer stores are drastically over-priced.
This includes places like Comp USA and Microcenter etc.
Small price tags at these stores always translate into
shoddy machines. It happens every time.
Before buying anything, pick up a copy of PC World, available at
almost any news stand. Each month they publish a pc buying guide,
much like Consumer Reports, a source of valuable information.
Note that almost all top rated PC's are sold
factory direct mail order: Gateway 2000, Dell, Zeos, Quantex,
are the top of the line. All sell Pentiums for under $2000,
some as little as 1600.
Additionally, there is a magazine called Computer Shopper
(can't miss it, it's the size of a phonebook), that is essentially
a huge mail order catalog. This is a good place to do comparison shopping.
