The larger issue here, and it is an important one, is what plugins and
helper applications will ACS support and instal?. I am suprised that
Acrobat isn't a standard issue, given how widespread pdf has become.
What about RealAudio and RealPlayer? Is there a standard VRML plugin
installed?

Last semester, I asked ACS to install a chemistry-specific plugin which
they were happy to do for me. I'm not convinced however, that this
request-only behaviour is really best or manageable.

Does ACS have a plan here? Is there some official way for faculty to
request software installations?
