I talked to Michael Prais in December and he assured me that
the Real plug in will be installed in all the general access
labs by the end of spring semester. I have been meeting with
him and his staff at regular intervals to discuss media
related plugins. I will definitely bring this one up as
well. Are there any others out there that warrant
discussion?

The larger issue here, and it is an important one, is what
plugins and
helper applications will ACS support and instal?. I am
suprised that
Acrobat isn't a standard issue, given how widespread pdf has
become.
What about RealAudio and RealPlayer? Is there a standard
VRML plugin
installed?

Last semester, I asked ACS to install a chemistry-specific
plugin which
they were happy to do for me. I'm not convinced however,
that this
request-only behaviour is really best or manageable.

Does ACS have a plan here? Is there some official way for
faculty to
request software installations?
