I am Jay Orbik, multimedia coordinator for Media Services at
NIU.
I have been working with several clients on campus regarding
streaming technologies. There are a lot of different ones
out there, some better than others. Sometimes it is a matter
of who hits the market "first with the most" as to who will
be the market survivor. This does not mean it is the best.
Here is what is going on. Distance Education has worked a
deal to put some courses online with RealEducation, a
spinoff of RealNetworks, makers of RealVideo and RealAudio.
With that arrangement all the encoding of materials and
posting to a web is done by the real folks.
About the same time Telecommunications and Media Services
were looking at streaming server technology and after much
research decided to support a Real Server. Media Services
will soon be able to provide an encoding service that will
turn video (and audio) into real files. These clips will be
limited to two to three minute segments. The resulting files
can then be posted on a Real Server located somewhere at
Computing and Telecommunications. These files can be
accessed by linking them to the pages on the clients'
homepage, wherever that is located. This service should be
available by the end of the Spring semester. We are working
out the details on how the directories will be set up and
accessed. Anyone who has the capacity the digitize video or
audio on their computer can encode their files into
RealAudio or RealVideo files by downloading the free encoder
at www.real.com. Otherwise Media Services will be able to do
this for you.
As far as Real plugins, Michael Prais of ACS told me that
Real plugins will be installed in the general access labs by
the end of the spring semester.
I meet with the ACS staff on a regular basis to communicate
client needs for plugins. I would be happy to relay any
requests. I would also welcome any feedback to the services
mentioned above.
