The rewards should not only address development time but extra e-
communications time as well . I've been taking an online course in
Instructional Technology dealing with We-Based Instruction this summer
and it has become apparent how much teacher time is required to run an
online course effectively. In a Web environment we lose that warm and
fuzzy face to face communication and tend to look to bulletin boards
and chat rooms to keep up with teacher-student feedback. This quickly
backlogs the professor and causes long feedback delays. I look at WBI
quite differently now. I think in time, skills in online
communications will become a specialty. I am not sure how to handle
the balance between f2f, research, and online courses, but I do know
online teaching takes a LOT of extra work.
