I asked my UNIV 101 class to take a quick look at the new site and
compare it to the old site. My students are all new freshmen who are
completely new to NIU and both of the web sites. I wanted to share
several of their comments about the sites with you to add their
perspective into the mix. I hope you find this to be helpful:

"I think that the new home page offers a lot more information and the
information is a lot easier to find. It has more general categories than
the old home page so you don't have to search as long for what you are
looking for. I like it a lot better."

"The new webpage looks cool and it's a lot easier to use."

"I went to the new NIU website. It's much more interesting than the old
one. The new one looks much more alive!!! I think it will attract more
people than the old site."

"I also looked at the new NIU homepage. I definitely like the new one
better. For one, it is more colorful. Also, the pictures make the page
look more fun in a way. It gives NIU more of a personality than the old
one."

My class really liked the updated site as you can see. While I'm
reading through all of the suggestions for improvements to the site I'm
thinking that I hope we all realize that although we may not be
completely satisfied with the new site, the new page is an excellent
improvement over the old page. The wonderful aspect about these
comments is that we all have a variety of opinions and suggestions for
improvements because we're all coming from different perspectives.
Although I know we realize that the designers cannot possibly include
every suggestion, I really want to commend the designers for including
as many of the suggestions of the advisory group as they could. As part
of the advisory group, I can verify that the new design is the product
of many hours of discussion and research into other university web
pages, the audience for the site, and the organization of the site. It
seems to me that with this new page, we're catching up to other
university web pages and will hopefully better serve our web visitors.

I appreciate the chance to share my thoughts and perspective.

Dan
