For those who couldn't attend, here's a brief summary of last Friday's
Webmasters meeting:

About 15 attended.

Jerry Zar, Dean of the Graduate School, announced that he was aggressively
pursuing the goal of getting all NIU units (depts, admin offices, and
other entities) online with homepages by the end of the academic year.
Those units who could not construct their own homepage would be provided
with assistance.

Phil Rider, Publications Editor from ACS and webmaster for the NIU
homepage, indicated that two graduate students would be hired to assist
in homepage construction/publishing. Dean Zar announced that one had
already been hired.

Professor Steve Bachrach described the conferencing software that
Mike Szela had developed for homepage interactive discussions.
The program provides a fascinating way for (among other things) allowing
online discussions of papers or other material that would be placed on
a homepage and then, like a computer bulleting board, let particpants
discuss it.

There was some thought given to whether we should break into separate
groups for techies/artists/policy issues.

A brief discussion emerged about how homepages could be utilized in
teaching. Dean Kitterle, of LA&S, although not there Friday, sent a post
out a few days ago soliciting interest in holding a meeting this term
on ways by which Net/computer instruction might be integrated into
the curriculum or classroom.

We also discussed some of the legal and other problems of homepage
publishing. I'll summarize those in a separate post.
