On the issue of the University's role in protecting academic freedom: I
was at the conference that created the statement by the AAUP on Artistic
Freedom (They created the statement now in use on Academic Freedom in the
30s). At that conference it was clear that the "robe" of academic and
artistic freedom extended to any and all expressions by the faculty
speaking and acting in their role as members of the faculty.....no matter
where that expression took place. Now, this is the understanding of
academic freedom expressed by those from both Harvard and Yale law schools
on the subject.
