I'm flattered by Bruce's suggestion. But, I'm wondering if it might not
be an even better idea of the "official" committee didn't actively
participate in some of the dicussions on this list. From what I've
seen in recent meetings, the Webmasters crowd has a great mix of
people who are active in WWW issues and those who, while neophytes,
have energy and imagination. It's especially the new-comers whose
ideas and concerns should be heard.
I also think it would be helpful if those running the University
committee, would step from behind their cloak of silence and
invisibility and more fully participate in some of these discussions.
Given the previous discussions on the TOMPAINE list, I'm surprised
that they do not recognize that their continued silence risks
contributing to their image of arrogance and insensitivity to the
issues that some of us confront daily.
Perhaps the chair or organizer of the committee, or somebody from Lowden
Hall or the Veeps office could give us a summary of where the committee's
work now stands. Given the importance of the issues, the length of
time the committee has been in existence, the growth of homepages and
web users, and the University's well-publicized Net connections, I'm
certain that such a report will be substantial.
