Boy I am gone one day and this list gets real active. I took the day
off for a doctor appointment to have an ultrasound of the baby.
Everything looks healthy and they are 99% sure it is a girl. Isn't
technology great some times! The baby is due in 4 more weeks, and I
haven't had time to start our webmasters home page yet. Looks like I
better make time.
I am also trying to plan a technical webmasters meeting for those who
are just getting started putting up homepages or just have questions.
Steve has agreed to help run the meeting (any other webmaster who
feels they can contribute is welcome to help) and I think we could do
it in our student computer lab (across the hall from our usual
meetings) which has a nice projector to demonstrate web designs.
What I need from those interested in attending this technical meeting
is some idea of what kinds of questions you have. Don't be shy. I
still hit the manual for basic codes or copy code form something on
the net I like and I have been doing this for a year now.
Here is an example of a typical technical question (which someone
asked me today). I have a professor who wants to set up his syllabus
on the net and needs to use some formatting ie. columns. What would
be the -best- way to do that?
Also are there any webmasters out there who use a html editor that
works well? I keep getting asked this question but everyone I know
still codes by hand. So, if you have one that you like, let us know.
Be sure to mention what platform the editor is on. For example I
code from my mac and then ftp the html to our web server which is on
OS/2. I see us doing more and more of this as the professors get
involved with teaching from the web.

Aline Click will, I think, be putting up a homepage for Webmasters
eventually. In the interim, I've gradually been enticing some of our
sociology students to get on line, and one of the first things they
ask about is how to construct homepages.
To help them out, I've just put up a homepage with some links to
answer their questions about WWW, html, and computer culture in
general. The book of Netiquette can also be found there.
It's still "under construction," but it might be useful for others as
well. If anybody finds any material or links that could be added,
holler.
The URL is: http://www.soci.niu.edu/~weblinks
People might want to check out Philosphy's homepage...it, too, is
under construction, but it's going to one of our best for content and
layout: http://www.soci.niu.edu/~phildept
