This is a question that I have been grappling with the last three months
as I have been constructing the Campus Tour page that Finance and
Planning is supporting. Since the page needed to be graphic intensive, I
decided to use many of Netscape's pre-HTML3.0 improvements eventhough
they might not be completely backward compatible. The reason is that
many of the codes for graphics that create these innovations are ignored by
others not yet up to standard while the necessary text _is read_ by the
browser. Result: text supplied for other browsers to function, but
graphic candy for those who can see it.
I did use Mosaic 2.0 in my construction as well, since it too is a very
popular browser and found that it supported most of Netscape's proposed HTML
3.0 improvements.
In essence, my decision was to make the pages as usable as I could for
those browsers that are falling behind. I did not, however, have
the luxury of being able to test every browser for compatibility.
Therefore, any help that anyone could provide me as to problems
your browser has with the page will be greatly appreciated.
Anyway, I just presented the page to a group of VIP's (i.e.
administration) this last Thursday. We hope to have the page officially
up and running by the end of next week with a button on the NIU Homepage
for access (Hello, Phil, we need to talk about placement!)
