I stumbled upon this group while checking out the newsgroups at mp.cs.niu.edu.
It's nice to get a chance to talk with some of the Web pioneers here at
NIU.

Like most of you, I've experienced frustration with the University's
foot-dragging when it comes to the networked computing environment. Like most
of you we have also invested a considerable amount of our personal time to fill
the gaps. Here's what we've been up to:

We run three WWW servers, 2 OS/2 (Goserve) and 1 Sun (HTTPD). The Sun
houses the SSRI home page, NIRIN (Northern Illinois Resource Information
Network), and some personal pages. We also use the Sun to store large SAS
datasets accessed by workstations using NFS. The OS/2 machines are used for
the CGS home page (no time to develop), CGS gopher, and contract work for WWW
project development.

I've also been goofing around with a sample page which uses http
forms to access a DB/2 database through Goserve. The OS/2 machines also serve
several project mailing lists.

We got the OS/2 gopher up and running in Aug. 93. The OS/2 Web server soon
followed. The Sun's HTTPD is a recent addition and I personally don't know
very much about how it works. Once I get over my fear of vi I might try to
learn a little more about it :-(

I'm also involved along with Denise Sturges in the development of the
American Farmland Trust's Farmland Information Center Gopher and HTTP
server (both OS/2 Goserve). The Web page is going public soon while the gopher
has been around for over a year.

I'm looking forward to exchanging ideas, experiences, and prospects with all of
you.

Anyone seen JAVA yet?
