Approval Procedure for Homepages

Hoping to comply with the new University homepage requirements,
I called the Publications office to obtain approval for the Sociology
homepage. Apparently, there is as yet no procedure for obtaining
approval.

Carlos Granatos, however, provided some helpful unofficial information, based
on his understanding of the current status of things:

1) The provost will likely be sending out a memo to department chairs
informing them of the policy

2) The two inch banner was chosen for practical reasons: The design
will (he said) include both an NIU and dept/unit name or log.
They wanted a standard format, and because some units have long
names, they wanted to assure sufficient space in the banner.

3) The Publications office will make the banner for the homepages.
The name authorized by the dept head will be sent to Carlos's office,
and art photo will create the graphic file that we the upload
to our individual homepage.

4) There is as yet no formal procedure for obtaining homepage approval.
I was initially told by one person that we would send our homepages
and their contents over (in hard copy), but this is obviously
impractical. Carlos said that he thought it would be done online
(as I understood it, by his office).

5) Carlos noted with some ironic bemusement that his office isn't
yet online and they currently aren't able to view the homepages
in-house.

Despite lack of resources, Carlos seems to have a reasonable grasp
of these issues. He was also able to summarize his understanding of
the policy in about two quick sentences. His concern, he said, applies
only to information relating to the superordinate body and is the only
information for which approval is required. Subordinate units are
free to decide for themselves what other information will be included
on homepages.

I'd suggest that questions be directed to him (although he may not
appreciate it). I'd also suggest that, from how he described his office's
resources, somebody get him jacked into the so he can view homepages
and sub to Webmasters.
