The following came across to the TOMPAINE list, but seems relevant
for WEBMASTERS.

Subject: NIU Homepages and HTML to use

Here is a question somewhat related to the recent discussion
on the design of Web homepages here at NIU.

We use very basic HTML (the language used to compose Web pages)
for our pages here in Geography. The primary reason is that it
is possible some of our potential viewers do not have the latest
Web browsers and we don't want to lose that audience.

It appears that about a third of the sites here at NIU are using
HTML that requires Netscape. Since I prefer to use Mosaic those
sites are closed books for me and perhaps others.

Should we be using the latest capabilities for Web page display
to appear sophisticated or the most basic in order to reach the
maximum audience?
